What does a designer do?

You might wonder, “Are you a drafter? A Designer? What is the difference?” Let me clarify. I am a designer. I’m on the final stretch to earning a coveted professional title, with 90% of the process complete—including all the required internship hours. I’m also a proud member of several professional organizations that review my work, education, and referral letters to validate my expertise.

What makes a Designer different?

Designers have a unique ability to translate abstract ideas into cohesive plans. Whether it’s a set of written notes, a rough sketch, or a collection of inspirational photos, my role is to transform these concepts into thoughtful, well-crafted solutions. This process is highly collaborative, involving a lot of dialogue to ensure your vision is fully realized.

The final output? Construction documents. These detailed drawings serve as a blueprint for contractors to bring your design to life. Simply put, I create images that tell a story—a story that’s clear, comprehensive, and ready to be built upon.

How is this different from a drafting service?

Drafting services can be an affordable option for those who already have a clear idea of what they want and aren’t looking for design input. These services often focus on producing straightforward drawings without considering design enhancements or broader problem-solving. While this streamlined approach can work in certain cases, it may lack the depth and thoughtfulness needed to fully capture your vision.

At Folding Oaks, design is about more than just the basics. It’s about crafting solutions that reflect your unique needs and telling your story through carefully considered details.

Thank you for following along, and as always, feel free to reach out if you have questions or need design assistance!
